Remarkable to the species are their voluminous, highly evolved throats and vocal cords. Not obvious externally beyond the broadness of their necks, fanfir have the ability to make themselves heard over many miles - and to deafen anybody nearby. They can regulate their own hearing with a secondary, flexible tympanic membrane. They also have some limited ability to manipulate thought patterns and hormone release in others through the vibrations they produce whilst talking or singing. This feeds naturally into their aptitude for music ([[#Culture and Society|see below]]).
