污染

“污染”是指个体遗传代码（及／或微外科机器人子系统）腐化程度的俚语。早期影响表现为性欲升高，继而降低自制力。极高污染已知可造成性狂、夸大妄想、极端性癖及失控的基因突变。
低水平基因污染可通过昂贵 DNA 治疗修复。更严重病例可治疗却无法治愈，有时会把使用者基因组搅乱到即使最好的基因改造也无效。微外科机器人污染通常较易处理；在专门中心待数天通常可逆转，但仍十分昂贵，需程序员个别照料。罕见情况下，整颗星球曾因特别强毒、可传染的污染微外科机器人株而隔离。
维克多·斯蒂尔曾以近乎破纪录的污染水平存活；第十三次银河热潮初期成功后，尖端医疗让他将症状控制到最低。许多富裕银河公民（包括维克多的推定继承人）取得了新世代免疫增强，能即时改写基因代码以抵抗疾病、毒素和危险环境。代价是少量基因污染；好在多数系统具自动修复子程序，给予足够时间即可逆转轻微损伤。

Many street drugs, back-alley doctors, and supposed “salons” are prime sources of taint. The U.G.C. health commission recommends only using vendors backed by well-known mega-corps.

More severe cases are treatable, though not curable, and in some cases can scramble the user’s genome to such an extent that even the best gene-mods will fail to have an effect.
