As the newly-matured bulls finish their transformation, hormonal shifts trigger subtly altered pheromones to be released, allowing for basic emotional information to be communicated on a nonverbal, subconscious level. Treated females are receptive and have pheromones of their own, allowing members of the opposite sexes to rapidly assess the other's level of attraction with a minimum of social posturing. Untreated females may note a slight musk in the air, and may still respond to more basic pheromonal signals on a lesser level. It is not uncommon for bulls to attempt to seduce female tourists using as few words as possible, a social competition that is frowned upon in polite society but persists all the same.
